Embrace (Poem 51 of 99)

Like a child soldier on his first massacre mission

I was afraid, reluctant, trembling at the knees

with formula one eye lids blinking uncontrollably

I didn’t ask for this role, I didn’t want to be in this position

So I neglected you for years,

burdened by your presence, as the soil is by rainfall

I had too much to lose by giving up self

until I came back to sense

and let the tide of responsibility erode my ego

seeing all I owe to you is all I owe to self

and now, finally, all these years later I see

my heart is soil fertile from which love can grow.
